SMR Track & Field Championships Report 2015

What a fantastic weekend!!!

Despite quite a few late scratchings, due to injury/weather/unavailability, MLAC athletes exceeded all expectations at the Southern Metropolitan Regional Track & Field Championships at Springvale over the weekend.

Following on from last year’s amazing performance of 41 medals (21 Gold, 5 Silver, 15 Bronze) & 89 finalists (Top 8), and with forecast temperatures of over 30 degrees on both days and a program that was due to run from 8am-approx 7pm each day, my hope before the weekend was that we could at least get close to last year’s results.

Well, I was blown away!!!!  (and I am not referring to the wind)

The 49 athletes that represented MLAC, in 139 events, managed to finish the weekend with an unbelievable 46 medals (20 Gold, 15 Silver, 11 Bronze) & 1 pending Victorian Best Performance (i.e. State Record), with 102 athletes reaching the Top 8 (i.e. finalists).

Congratulations to the following athletes/medallists:

GOLD MEDALLISTS
Louisa Lazar, Aeon Beu, Benjamin O’Brien, Rubin Howard, Kevin Healy, Lucinda Holloway, Nicholas Jackson, Lochlan Curry, Adam Spencer, Will Sharp & Mitchell Hughes.

SILVER MEDALLISTS
Eliza Sharp, Aeon Beu, Sophie Jackson, Liam Walsh, Lucinda Holloway, Nicholas Jackson, Will Sharp, Tom Johnston, Ella Rizzi, Charlotte-Ruby Robinson, Hugo Hansen & Haddi El-Shorbagy.

BRONZE MEDALLISTS
Eliza Sharp, Alexander Convy, Rubin Howard, Holly Spencer, Liam Walsh, Emma Dowsing, Lillian Baikie, Jada Daly, Will Sharp & Ella Rizzi.

For a more detailed list, outlining medallists from each age group & the actual events they medalled in, please see attached.

Thank you to all the parents that were there to support the athletes and cover the various duties that the Centre was required to perform to ensure the smooth running of the event.  Parents’ willingness to “chip-in” was much appreciated and made my job a lot easier.

Special thanks to Joanne Spencer, Penny Stephens & Michael Clarke, for committing to “Key official” roles and who were basically on duty for the entire weekend.  Thanks also to Robbo (El Presidente), for transporting all of our equipment there at 6am on Saturday morning and Graham Spencer, for packing it up & transporting it back at approx. 7pm last night (the end of a very long weekend – and I don’t mean the good kind, where you get Monday off)).

I am immensely proud of the way every athlete conducted themselves and strived to “do their best”.  Regardless of your final result/placing, you all represented our club with distinction against the best athletes in our Region (and in some cases, against the best in the State).

I will now wait, with anticipation, to see how many of our little champions have progressed/qualified for the State Track & Field Championships at the end of March.  Will let everyone know as soon as I find out (hopefully within the next 5-10 days).

Cheers
